Year 1/2 Class Information

Phonics and Reading
Children will access phonics on a daily basis and be grouped according to their stage not their age, so classes will be mixed and taught by different teachers/teaching assistants. The children will receive a school book that will be familiar to them, as well as a home school phonics book, however both books include the phonic sounds they have learnt during the week. Children are asked to read these books as much as possible to become confident, fluent readers. These books will be given to children every Thursday and are to be returned the following Wednesday.
Alongside these books children will also be given a reading book from our reading scheme that can be changed once completed.
Once children have completed the phonics programme the children will move onto the spelling programme (year 2). Children will access the spelling programme every morning.
Children in year 2 select books of the appropriate level from our accelerated reading scheme. Once the children have completed a book, they must take a quiz before it is changed.
All children should bring their reading books and diary into class each day. Reading folders need to be placed in the reading tray, so that we can check them and change them if required. If children have read at home, could parents/carers please indicate this with a signature/comment. Children should aim to read to an adult every night for approx. 10 minutes to continue to make progress.

Homework

Homework will be given out every Wednesday. This includes: reading, phonics/spelling practice and a maths task. We also recommend children use timetables rock stars as often as possible. All homework is to be handed in no later than the following Monday.

P.E.

This term, Willow class have coaches delivering P.E. sessions on a Monday and Wednesday. All children should have a change of clothes and plimsolls for these sessions. P.E. kits should be left in school until the Easter holidays when they can then be taken home.

Long Term Plans are available for you to view or download and can be found in Curriculum section, under Curriculum Intent & Plans.
