In 2011, the Government introduced a ‘pupil premium’ to raise achievement among disadvantaged children.
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
It is up to schools to decide how to use the funding, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need. At Middleton-in-Teesdale Nursery and Primary School we have focussed our additional funding on tackling underachievement due to low social, emotional and behavioural reasons and raising standards in numeracy and literacy.
